Authors, Say Thanks and Feel It: Gratitude
23 of 28 big ideas from the world of coaching to grow your author business

The twenty-third in a 28-part series on 28 big ideas from coaching for authors to coach themselves, adapted from my book, The Coach Within.
“If the only prayer you ever say in your life is thank you, it will be enough.”
— Master Eckhart
“Gratitude bestows reverence, allowing us to encounter everyday epiphanies, those transcendent moments of awe that change forever how we experience life and the world.” — John Milton
“You simply will not be the same person two months from now after consciously giving thanks each day for the abundance that exists in your life.”
— Sarah Ban Breathnach
Whether you fall back on subjective experience or objective data, gratitude delivers. It delivers in general and it will deliver for your author goals and author business. It’s a simple, transformational practice that induces awe, fills us up, changes our perspective, brings us more, and is backed by science.
Evidence of the very real and growing number of benefits derived from the routine practice of gratitude is mounting. The collective output of more than twenty-five research studies shows that our brains, the rest of our bodies, and our lives can change over time thanks to gratitude (enhanced physical and psychological health; heightened self-esteem, empathy, generosity, and mental fortitude; increased optimism, joy, and happiness; decreased stress, isolation, and aggression; improved relationships).
Just WOW, right? Can your author life benefit from all of the above? Let’s make our first act of appreciation a homage to the nourishing riches bestowed by the cultivating the habit of gratitude.
As we empower ourselves as authors by tapping into our own wisdom through coaching, perhaps nothing can provide a more sustaining foundation to our work than this. Get started with the to-do’s below.
Coaching Yourself In Action
⎕ Devote a section of your journal (or dedicate a brand new journal) to gratitude. Create a running list of things you are grateful for in your writing, book marketing, and author life…a list that can be added to as a daily ritual or as you’re inspired. As you write what you’re grateful for, feel the gratitude for those things.
Big Gratitude
