Not all author expenses are created equal.

Some are the necessary costs of doing business—editing, cover design, ISBNs—that get your book to market but don’t guarantee income.

Other expenses are investments likely to lead directly or indirectly to revenue generation: tools, training, and services that have a measurable impact on your bottom line.

Understanding the difference helps you make smarter spending decisions and build a truly profitable author business. With exploration and experimentation, you can discover over time which expenses can guarantee income.

Here’s my current list of high-value expenses. What would you add? Where do you see easy cost-to-cash, expense-to-income conversion in your author life?
